best resort hotels in sri lanka

best resort hotels in sri lanka 7 nights from £1,220

Whatever time of year you wish to travel, there is always somewhere in Sri Lanka where the weather will be perfect...

And, with so many fabulous hotels to choose from, there's something to suit all tastes and budgets.  Below are a selection of our top recommendations and we can organise everything for you, and would be very happy to tailor-make the ideal itinerary for you if you don't wish to just fly in and stay at just one place.  We have divided Sri Lanka in to 4 separate areas: south coast, hill country (which includes the cultural triangle and tea trails), east coast and lastly, Colombo, with closest proximity to the international airport on the west coast.

South coast

Cape Weligama Located on a stunning peninsula overlooking the ocean, this exceptionally luxurious 5 star resort on the south coast is about 30 minutes from the city of Galle.  Set in 12 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, the luxury contemporary villas all have their own butler and the service is exceptional. Bays and beaches are a short stroll away, and the 60m crescent-shaped, cliff-edge infinity pool provides magnificent Ocean panoramas.  One of the things we particularly like about the resort is what's included in the cost of your accommodation, namely:  breakfast, a light lunch, dinner, all alcoholic drinks, snacks, room service and laundry.  7 nights from £2,315 per person sharing on a semi-all-inclusive basis, including flights and private airport transfers.

The Fortress  Cleverly mixes modern design with Dutch and Portuguese architectural heritage, creating a modern resort set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean and offering a truly luxurious destination on Sri Lanka's beautiful south coast, in Galle.  The Fortress (don't be put off by the name) is a delightful luxury boutique hotel with just 53 bedrooms and suites - an oasis of tranquility where you can leave the cares of the real world behind.  The hotel has a fabulously relaxing Spa Naturel, which combines signature treatments with more traditional Ayurvedic treatments. There's also a fitness studio for workouts and a charming yoga pavilion for classes.  7 nights from £1,220 including breakfast, return economy flights and private transfers.

The above are just two superb options on the south coast, but there are more!  Including a selection of fabulous private villas.  See all places to stay on the south coast

Cultural triangle

Vil Uyana  If you want to experience the island's interior and to discover the extraordinary cultural heritage of Sri Lanka at the same time, we would recommend staying at Vil Uyana.  It's a member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World and offers spacious luxury dwellings, built over a wetlands area just a few kilometres from Sigiriya.  The hotel will be happy to arrange cultural tours and activities in the local area and beyond. You can climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress located 5 km away, and visit Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka’s cultural cities.  Vil Uyana is also wondeful for yoga, meditation and spa treatments.  Room per night from £280.

East coast

Jungle Beach  Located on Sri Lanka's relatively unexplored east coast, Jungle Beach is an eco-resort that provides the perfect escape in which to enjoy some personal pampering.  On one side the soft call of the ocean and on the other, the tranquillity of the jungle provides the ideal atmosphere in which to experience the ancient healing powers of Ayurveda.  In addition to spa treatments, guests can enjoy cultural excursions, whale watching trips, snorkeling or working out in the gym.  7 nights from £625 per person sharing (low season) on a bed and breakfast.  Flights and transfers available on request.

Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa  Located on beautiful Pasikuda Bay on an untouched stretch of white sandy beach, Maalu Maalu offers you a wonderful place to escape by the sea.  When you have spent enough time relaxing on the glorious beach or in the Ayurvedic spa, you can go snorkeling or scuba diving, wind surfing, kayaking or cycling. For a spectacular cultural excursion, we would recommend taking a tour of the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site, which majestically portrays Sri Lanka’s illustrious heritage.  Deluxe Rooms from £110 per night, including breakfast.  Flights and transfers available on request.
