I thought my holiday would be good but I was unprepared for how brilliant I would feel by the end of the week evening standard
"Thank you all so very much for your energy, expertise and inspiration"
Located off the south east coast of India, Sri Lanka is a magical destination for a holiday during the European winter months.
Sri Lanka has it all: beautiful tropical beaches, cooler mountains, incredible wild life, tea plantations, ancient monuments, excellent food and diverse cultures. The coasts are tropical with many palm lined sandy beaches and charming little towns, whilst the centre of the island is largely mountainous with a cooler climate and dotted with waterfalls, tea plantations and colonial architecture.
Sri Lanka is great for familes, couples and single travellers.
The best time to visit from a weather perspective (for most of the island) is from December to March, making this an excellent destination for a holiday during the cold European winter. However, the north east is perfect during the European summer (stay at Jungle Beach). You may like to start by looking at:
These all offer the ultimate in style, comfort and luxury. Numerous cultural and activity excursions are available at all properties. We would be delighted to advise you and organise everything for you.
Alternatively, you may prefer to stay in a private villa. Our villas on the south coast include (but are not limited to):
In the central interior, in the hills and rainforests near Kandy, we also recommend a selection of wonderful boutique hotels:
Why not combine a stay in the mountains with some time on the coast? We will organise everything for you. Or combine the Cultural Triangle with Kandy and the Ceylon Tea Trails before heading off for 3 nights in the Maldives on the way home. See: Sri Lanka Highlights & Maldives
For exploring the ancient Singalese kingdom, we recommend basing yourself at one of these charming but very different options:
If you would like to combine a visit to the Cultural Triangle with a week relaxing on the beach, please see our Beach & Cultural Triangle itinerary. We can create numerous different tailor-made itineraries for you all around Sri Lanka.
Unlike the south coast, the east coast is very undeveloped in terms of luxury beach resorts. However, what there is represents great value and is a great destination during the European summer.
Jungle Beach - offers the perfect escape in which to enjoy some personal pampering. On one side the soft call of the ocean and on the other, the tranquillity of the jungle provides the ideal atmosphere in which to experience the ancient healing powers of Ayurveda. Another great east coast option is the eco-friendly Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa, also with an Ayurvedic spa (and on-site Ayurvedic doctor) and a good selection of water sports.
Another great option is Trinco Blu by Cinnamon - great for whale watching (April to September) and water sports.
On your way in or out of the country (or both), we recommend 'overnighting' at a gorgeous boutique hideaway - The Wallawwa - that's just 20 minutes from the airport but feels a million miles away. Alternatively, if your taste is more for colonial elegance, we recommend Galle Face Hotel - set on the seafront in the heart of Colombo. If you want to get off the plane and head straight off to the nearest great value beach resort, we would recommend Avani Kalutara, about 90 minutes south of Colombo. And, nearby, is a wonderful boutique beach hotel - Ayurveda Maha Gedara - which specialises in Ayurvedic treatments and programmes.
Weather & Seasons
Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.
From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 64 inches a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year.
All visitors to Sri Lanka require a visa. You can obtain a short stay visa (up to 30 days) via an online visa process
