Heure Bleue Palais is a charming Relais et Chateaux hotel with rooms set around a classic Moroccan courtyard. Uniquely in the Essaouira medina, there’s a wonderful rooftop pool with views over the bay and the fort.
The hotel was originally a substantial riad and has been elegantly transformed into a stylish sanctuary filled with rich fabrics and clubby colonial-style furniture. As with all self-respecting riads, once you step inside its peaceful walls it’s hard to believe you are just a short stroll from the bustling souks and their spice-laden stalls.
Heure Bleue’s trump card is its fabulous rooftop pool (the only one in town) and terrace, with its panoramic views over the medina (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the ocean just beyond. In the summer heat, the pool offers a cooling respite and, when the sun sets, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy a drink in the warm evening air, before heading downstairs to the hotel’s restaurant which serves traditional Moroccan fare and European classics.
Heure Bleue’s 33 sumptuous rooms and suites are clustered around a central courtyard in a variety of designs that reflect the influences of Africa, Europe and the Orient. The upper floor rooms have wonderful views across the harbour. The four suites – choose from African, Portuguese, English or Oriental styling – all have king-sized beds, oversized bathtubs, and Wifi.
It is approximately a 2 hour 40 taxi transfer from Marrakech International Airport, heading due west to the Atlantic Coast.
