best sri lanka family holidays

Sri Lanka is a magical destination for a family holiday, offering a wonderful choice of activities, beaches, experiences and accommodation.

Whether you are simply looking for a beach holiday or would like to combine this with other adventures and cultural experiences, we can tailor-make the perfect family holiday for you.  Whatever you choose to do, you will be met on arrival at Colombo airport by one of our English speaking drivers and whisked off in air-conditioned luxury.  Our vehicles all have complimentary water, fruit, refreshing towels and wifi.

The key point to note about family holidays in Sri Lanka is that this is a place for families who want to experience things together.  There's nowhere with a comprehensive all day kids' club.  But, for lifetime memories of an amazing family holiday with beaches, wildlife, culture and adventure - Sri Lanka is hard to beat!

We have divided the country in to various different areas, encompassing beach (on west coast - near Colombo, south and east coasts), the Hill Country and the famous Cultural Triangle.  Here are a few highlights and ideas to whet your appetite:

South coast

If you don't think you would want a 2 to 3 hour drive immediately after your arrival at Colombo airport, we would suggest a night at The Wallawwa before your journey to Sri Lanka's south coast, which is well served with family friendly resorts and wonderful family villas. Our top recommendations are:

Anantara Peace Haven Despite sounding like a monastery, this delightful new resort is perhaps the most family friendly on the island for those looking for a place with a Kids' club and/or a Teens' club.  Located amidst a 42 acre coconut plantation and glorious beaches and Indian Ocean views, the resort offers a luxurious hideaway with easy access to iconic cultural sites, spectacular national parks and whale watching destinations.  You can practice holistic exercises on the shore (yoga, pilates and tai chi) as you watch the sunrise and discover the local area by bicycle or tuk-tuk. Perhaps play tennis or badminton, relax in the spa or head to the gym (open 24 hours) for a workout.  7 nights from £1,385 per person, including flights and transfers. More

Walatta House  Designed to perfectly reflect a fusion of architectural and natural elements, 3 bedroom Walatta House is noted for being one of the most distinctive villas on the island’s South Coast.  Near to Tangalle, this sophisticated, sleek and contemporary villa is partially built in to the hillside, looking out over its one acre tropical gardens and the Indian Ocean beyond.  The house comes with a chef, house keeper and gardener who will help ensure that you enjoy a lovely relaxing holiday and will look after your every wish.  Perhaps best of all, the secluded sandy beaches are at the bottom of the garden.  6 nights villa rental from £2,010, including staff and transfers from ColomboMore

The Fortress  Don't be put off by the name!  Set on the beach and close to Galle, children will enjoy the Little Adventurers Club and there are lots of family friendly local excursions too for everyone to experience together.  Depending on the age of the children, visits to temples and other cultural wonders may be fairly low on their 'wish list', but a chance to see elephants, water buffalo, deer, crocodiles - and maybe even the elusive leopard - at nearby Uda Walawe National Park will probably be met with much more enthusiasm!  There are a selection of room types to suit families, - particulary the 2 bedroom Resdences.  These further benefit from an outdoor dining deck, a private infinity swimming pool with coast views and the luxury of a 24 hour butler service.  7 nights from £1,220 including flights  More

Cape Weligama Perched on a private peninsula that juts out in to the ocean, this luxurious resort has a great selection of family accommodation (inter-connecting rooms and private residences) and, to help the parents relax, your stay here is on a semi-all-inclusive basis.  With a family swimming pool for those under 12, glorious beaches, and a host of activities and excursions, there's plenty to keep everyone happy and entertained. Explore remote coves by kayak, try surfing, jump on a bicycle and explore the nearby villages and ancient temples or take a boat trip to go whale watching.  Or head to the national park to see elephants.  7 nights semi-all-inclusive from £2,315 including flights.  More

Cultural Triangle

Sri Lanka's cultural triangle stretches from Dambulla in the south, to Polonnaruwa in the east and Anuradhapura in the north.  Sigiriya is in the centre of the triangle, and close to our recommended places for families to stay:

Cinnamon Lodge  Set in 12 acres of landscaped gardents and just 30 minutes from the main sites in the Cultural Triangle, Cinnamon Lodge has recently been refurbished and makes an excellent base for exploring the area. If you stay at Cinnamon Lodge in July - September, you’ll be able to witness the legendary Gathering when hundreds of elephants move towards the lake during the dry season. Furthermore, there are 3 great nature parks (Minneriya, Kaudulla and Eco Park) within minutes of the lodge.  When you're not out exploring, there's boating, cycling, tennis, badminton, swimming, bird watching as well as occasional live music in the evenings.  If you want something more adventurous, how about rock climbing or hot-air ballooning?  Room per night from £106More

Vil Uyana  A member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World, offering spacious luxury dwellings, built over a wetlands area.  Vil Uyana is spread out over a large area and children love using buggies or bikes to get around.  You could also enjoy a picturesque cycling or walking trail and, one morning, join the resident naturalist for a guided walk to bring the forest to life or, one evening, the Loris watching tour to catch a glimpse of these adorable little creatures is a must.  Apart from visiting the main attractions of the Cultural Triangle, you can visit the village temple and learn about Buddhism from the head monk or visit the craft village and learn about traditional Sri Lankan crafts.  Room per night from £280More

Family itineraries

You can either choose to start on the beach before moving on to explore the interior, or do it the other way around.  Or, beach - interior - beach if you would like to top and tail your holiday with time beside the sea.  Much depends on how many days you wish to spend in Sri Lanka, the age of your children, your budget and how much exploring you want to do.
