barbados

barbados caribbean

The Caribbean island of Barbados is characterised by its English colonial history, gorgeous beaches, exceptional restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the Caribbean.

The island is predominantly flat, ideal for the fields of sugar cane, with a few gently rolling hills to the north. The west coast is lined with fine white sand and natural coral reefs and has long been considered the 'smart' side of Barbados, particularly the area known as St James.  This is where Sandy Lane and Waves Hotel & Spa are located.  On the north west coast, choose Cobblers Cove for cool colonial style combined with gracious Caribbean living.

More independent travellers will love the studios at Bourgainvillea Beach Resort on the south coast.

If you would prefer your own fully staffed luxury private villa, right on the beach and sleeping 16, we would recommend The Great House.  Also located on the west coast, an easy drive from historic Speightstown

It's easy to get around the island as it only has 60 miles of coastline.  During your stay, if you can tear yourself away from the beach and feel like exploring, we would recommend visiting the Andromeda Botanic Gardens, near to Bathsheba for an abundance of tropical plants.  And, for a deeper understanding of the complex history of Barbados, it's well worth visiting St Nicholas Abbey, an impressive colonial plantation house.

If you're in to surfing, head to the wild east coast, where the Atlantic Ocean's continuous swells provide great surfing.

Weather and seasons

The climate in Barbados tends to be pretty good all year, but we would recommend avoiding the hurricane season from June to October.

Best time to visit is December to May.

in January, the average daily high temperature is 28°C (83°F), while the low average is 21°C (70°F). In July, the average daily high is 30°C (86°F), while the average low is 23°C (74°F). February to May are the driest months (April averages only seven days of rain), while July is the wettest month with some 18 days of rain.

The tourist high season runs from mid-December through to mid-April.
