If you are travelling to South Africa with your family and would like to take your children on safari, the Eastern Cape is ideal - it's malaria free.

Having said that, if you're not travelling with children, the fabulously luxurious safari lodges are perfect for adults too!

Fly in to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town and we will pick you up and drive you to one of our recommended lodges for an exceptional safari.  On our last visit, which was sadly only for one night, we saw lion, elephant, leopard, wart hogs, zebra, baboons, giraffe and many fabulous bird species.

  • Stay in your own luxurious private home at Kwandwe
  • Or one of the stylish suites at Ecca Lodge

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, in the heart of South Africa's unspoilt Eastern Cape province, is a world-class Big Five safari experience in 22 000 hectares (54,000 acres) of malaria-free pristine private wilderness.

Renowned for understated luxury, exquisite scenery and the animals and wildlife that call the Reserve home.

Thousands of animals including lion, black and white rhino, buffalo, elephant and cheetah roam these expansive plains. The meaning of Kwandwe in isiXhosa is “Place of the Blue Crane”, and the Reserve is a proud home to a population of these rare, highly endangered birds (South Africa’s National Bird). The Reserve is also sanctuary to other threatened species including the Knysna woodpecker, Cape grysbok, black wildebeest, crowned eagle and black-footed cat.

Seasons in South Africa

  • Summer:  December – February
  • Winter:  June – August
  • Spring:  September – November
  • Autumn:  March - May

Garden Route (Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, inc Eastern Cape)

Summer-time in the Garden Route is typically warm / hot with mild to chilly winters. Most rainfall occurs in winter but mostly at night, keeping the area perennially green and scenic. In fact winter along the Garden Route is often tempered by lovely sunny, wind-still days only getting chilly at night.

Best time to travel and what to do

Year-round!  With its particularly mild, relatively warm and sunny climate, the Garden Route is accessible at any time of year. So, apart from visiting Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, here care a few other ideas.

Summer is typically spent on the beaches of Plettenberg Bay or nearby, but with plentiful activities in the area, you’ll be busy enough in winter time too! Bungy-jumping, tree-top canopy tours, whale-watching, boating, kayaking and plenty of hiking or cycling trails for the adrenalin junkies, to elephant parks, bird & monkey sanctuaries, walking trails, lagoon cruises, or simply relaxing, there’s plenty to do for everyone!  See also golf at Fancourt, with three great courses.

Average temperatures (° celsius)

  • Summer:  Min = 15, Max = 25
  • Winter:  Min = 7, Max = 19

Game viewing at Kwandwe

Kwandwe is open all year and game viewing throughout the year is excellent.

  • Children of all ages are welcome (maximum 2 children, 16 years and younger, in triple accommodation at any one time).
  • Regretfully, children 5 years and younger cannot participate in game drives. Childminders available at an additional cost.
  • Only two triples in camp at any one time. Children age 6 to 11 can be accommodated on game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion.
