khanom

khanom thailand

Khanom is a small country town on the western side of the Gulf of Thailand.  The closest airport, Surat Thani, is a 90 minute drive away. Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket are also easily accessible with transfer times of 3 hours, 2 1/2 hours and 4 hours respectively.

Khanom has a local population of 11,000 people of all walks of life. The main sources of livelihood in Khanom are farming and fishing. The agricultural landscape is carpeted with coconut, rubber, palm oil, pineapple and banana plantations with grazing cows roaming freely. One can really enjoy laid-back lifestyle of the friendly villagers.

Our recommended resort here is the sleek, contemporary Aava Resort & Spa, that combines Scandinavian and Thai sensibilities to magical effect.

Khanom has several hidden surprises with unspoilt beaches, breathtaking waterfalls and interesting caves. To the north of Khanom is the beautiful natural park of Khao Luang. The waterfront of Khanom offers a breeding ground for rare pink dolphins (Sousa Chinensis) and the thrill of spotting a pink dolphin is an everlasting experience for many people.

Weather and when to go

Hot and sunny almost all year round temperatures are steady in the mid to high twenties for much of the year, nudging up above the 30°C mark between April and August. As it is in the tropics it is suceptible to short, sharp rain storms, however these rarely last more than 20 minutes and are most frequent in October and November.

There are no direct flights from London to Khanom.  Fly to Surat Thani, via Bangkok, and then a one hour transfer to Aava from the airport.  Alternatively, fly to Phuket direct, followed by a 3 hour transfer.
