kruger national park

kruger national park south africa

The Kruger National Park is in north-east of South Africa and runs along the border of Mozambique in the east, Zimbabwe in the north, and the southern border is the Crocodile River.

The Park is an east drive from Jo'burg or we can arrange for you to fly in by private plane.

The park covers 20,000 square kilometers and is divided in 14 different ecozones, each supporting different wildlife. It is one of the main attractions of South Africa and it is considered the flagship of South African National Parks.

The park was established in 1898 by the South African President Paul Kruger as a protected area for wildlife and it opened its gate the general public in 1927 for the first time.  Today, it's home to South Africa's No. 1 ranked golf course - Leopard Creek - and is a spectacular place to combine golf and safari, with some truly spectacular places to stay, such as world famous Londolozi and the wonderful Lion Sands

Weather and seasons

Contrary to the Cape, the rainy season is during the summer months, predominantly characterised by daytime thunder-storms and down-pours that pass quickly and usually dissipate at night. But temperatures can peak at 30+ degrees in the daytime which can be unpleasant unless in air-conditioned surroundings! Winter brings crisp, clear days and very chilly evenings – cosy fleece tops and jackets, beanies and scarves are an absolute must for the evening game drives!

Best time to travel and what to do

Both summer and winter months bring their own highlights to game viewing at Kruger National Park. In summer, the waterholes and rivers are full, attracting plenty of game and the bushveld is lush with growth, although its density can make game viewing a bit harder. Newborns make their appearance in early summer and birding is excellent as the migrating birds arrive.

However winter is our preferred season for game viewing with less dense vegetation to negotiate and better visibility to spot game. And with less rain, the wildlife tends to migrate to the available water sources in higher quantities. The daytime temperatures are also more bearable although the nights can be very cold!
