Weather and seasons

The “sunshine state” of South Africa, KZN boasts almost 320 days a year of sun making it an all year round tourist-friendly destination. Summer time can be very hot though and with a high humidity index, sometimes quite uncomfortable. Winter is very pleasant and it rarely gets cold unless in the high altitudes of the Drakensberg. The moderate to warm sea temperatures also make this region a popular sea-side holiday destination.

  • Summer:  December – February
  • Winter:  June – August
  • Spring:  September – November
  • Autumn:  March - May

Best time to travel and what to do

In our opinion, autumn, winter or spring is the best time to see KZN. It just gets too hot in summer. And there’s a myriad of things to do and see at any time of year: miles of unspoilt beaches up the northern coast, incredible Big Five game viewing in many private game reserves, the historical battlefields inland and of course, the majestic and beautiful “Berg” (Drakensberg Mountain range) and the temperate Midlands area in the west that offer many hiking trails, fishing spots, pristine golf courses and horse-riding.
