Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city, was once known as the "Pearl of Asia."

Originally founded in 1434, Phnom Penh was considered one of the loveliest French built cities in Indochina in the 1920s.  We recommend staying at Raffles Hotel Le Royal - a beautiful old Art Deco colonial building in the heart of the city.

Wide boulevards and busy markets are central features of this charming city. The Royal Palace, Wat Phnom, Silver Pagoda (pictured above) and the National Museum are all well worth visiting.

On a more depressing but historically important note, the Killing Fields and S-21 Prison are also integral if you want to learn about the country’s recent turbulent history and gain a deeper insight into this beautiful destination.

Situated on the banks of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers, the Phnom Penh metropolitan area is home to about 2.2 million.
