punakha bhutan

Bhutan is a landlocked Himalayan kingdom that has preserved its unique culture and traditions.

Our recommended luxury hideaways in Punakha are:

As Punakha is around a 4 hour drive from the airport in Bhutan, we highly recommend spending your first night at Uma Paro by Como or Amankora Punakha which are only 10 to 20 minutes from the airport.  We have a number of great itineraries that combine both properties and some wonderful adventures in this magical kingdon.  See, for example, our 7 night Luxury Adventure in Bhutan with Como

Punakha has breath-taking scenery, from lush green terraced rice-paddies rolling up to high mountain passes with Buddhist prayers fluttering in the wind, to the snow-capped mountains above.  Don't miss seeing the magnificent Punakha Dzong!

A luxury holiday to Bhutan will provide the chance to experience time-old Buddhist communities, such as travel to dramatic medieval monasteries with maroon-clad monks chanting prayers in unison. We can adapt your private tour to stop at a local festival to see masked dancers in all their vibrancy. If you are looking for a trekking holiday, you can hike through Bhutan's stunning network of ancient walking trails, or just take a relaxing private journey with a selection of light day-walks.

Bhutan is nothing short of remarkable and Bhutan guarantees a travelling experience that is the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the modern world.

We have a selection of sublime luxury hideaways:

Weather and seasons

In the western, central and eastern Bhutan you will mostly experience cold European-like weather. Winter lasts here from November to March. The Monsoon occurs between June and August when the temperature is normally between 8° and 21°C. October and November are arguably the best months, when the monsoon has passed and the skies are clear. The spring months of March, April and May are best for the flora, but it can be stormy as the monsoon builds up for July-September.

Getting here

It's an 11 hour and 30 minute international flight from London (via Delhi or Bangkok) to Paro Airport, followed by  a 4 hour transfer by road to Uma Punakha by Como.  However, we would recommend staying at Uma Paro by Como (just 10 minutes from the airport) en route to Punakha.

You may even like to stop over in Bangkok on the way there or back at Metropolitan by Como.

It takes about 3 weeks to obtain visas for a visit to Bhutan and we will look after this for you.
