zambezi river

zambezi river zambia

The mighty Zambezi River flows beside one of our all time favourite luxury lodges, Tongabezi, on its way to the awesome Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi Oa Tunya ('the smoke that thunders').

  • Tangala - private 4 bedroom family home for exclusive hire
  • Sindabezi - luxury private island for bare foot chic
  • Tongabezi - exceptionally luxurious lodge

Many consider the Victoria Falls to be a 'must see' and we agree.  We particularly like the 'moonbows' (lunar rainbows) arching through the mist when the moon is bright, and, in the day time, enjoying the incredible views of the Falls from Livingstone Island which sits atop the gorge in the middle of the Zambezi.  You can even take a plunge in a pool on the cliff edge, before tucking in to a delicious lunch.

The white water rafting below the Falls is a combination of high adrenalin and gentle drifting through the river gorge.  And great fun!

For a more leisurely experience on the river, you can canoe from Tongabezi down to their other private island, Sindabezi.  Alternatively, the Lodge can drive you in one of their wide bodied boats along the river banks, spotting hippo, crocs, buck and, occasionally, elephant and giraffe.  You will be amazed by the incredible and abundant bird life that calls the Zambezi home.

Whether you looking for a private family home, a romantic island hideaway or a luxurious riverside lodge, we have just the places for you!  We know them all well and highly recommend them.

To get to Livingstone Airport, most people fly up via Johannesburg in South Africa, which takes just under 2 hours.  The transfer by private vehicle from the airport to Tongabezi takes about 45 minutes.

Weather and when to go

Between May and August is the coolest time of the year with temperatures hitting between 28°C during the day and dropping off to as low as 7°C during the night. This season, known as the dry season is the best time to visit before the hot season starts in September through to November and when the temperatures soar into the 40s. Avoid the wet when the temperatures are in the 30s between December and April and, true to its name, it rains, often for days, and the roads become impassable.
