As of October 2014, Ernie Els's remodelled Club Teluk Datai is now open for play on the Malaysian island of Langkawi...

And it's just been crowned the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the inaugural World Golf Awards, hosted in Portugal.  Just two weeks after its official grand opening, the four-time Major winner’s stunning Langkawi layout, which sits amidst a tropical rainforest stretching to the shores of the Andaman Sea (pictured above), scooped the much-coveted accolade, voted upon by golf travel executives and members of the media.

In further recognition of Els’ remarkable design, which has already earned the admiration of the world’s golfing media, The Els Club Teluk Datai also collected the ‘Best New Golf Course in Asia’ award, rounding off an incredible evening at Quinta do Lago, Algarve.  So, for golfers, this is a 'must play' course.

Also on Langkawi, nestled at the foothills of the majestic Gunung Raya, sprawled over 300 acres of former rubber plantation land, there is Gunung Raya Golf Resort, boasting an intriguing international-standard golf course designed by renowned American golf architect Max Wexler. Within its lush landscape, you'll encounter beautiful rolling greens, panoramic tees, and impeccable fairways, magnificently contoured with sand traps and water hazards.

The clubhouse and practice facilities are adequate for the visiting Langkawi golfer. Overall Gunung Raya Golf Resort is a nice course to play but it won’t win any awards, but nevertheless makes for a good day out.

When staying on Langkawi Island, we recommend:
