how to save booking family holidays

how to save booking family holidays

Many people imagine that the best way to save money on a family holiday is to book at the last minute.  90% of the time, this simply is not the case...

The key to saving as much money as possible on a family holiday is to plan as far in advance as possible.  Most hotels and resorts offer reasonably substantial accommodation discounts if booked well in advance, and - for Europe - December and January are generally the best months to snap these up.  You can save up to 30% on accommodation and often receive great secondary benefits too, such as complimentary upgrades to half board or a complimentary second room for children.

The other key reason for booking as far in advance as possible is the cost of flights.  If you want, for example, to fly in August or over Christmas, the airlines will already have factored in a premium (however far in advance you book) but you will still be saving money if you book ahead as flight prices continue to rise every month.  The other point to bear in mind is that, if you don't book ahead, you might not be able to book any flights at all - as they will have sold out.  Lastly, cheapest flights are offered to the most competitive airports, i.e. those serviced by multiple airlines offering several flights each day.  Airports like Malaga, Dalaman and Faro.  It's not just flights, of course, that may be sold out.  The same is likely to happen with accommodation at resorts during peak family holiday periods.

Finally, the last great benefit of booking several months ahead, is that you will only have to put down a fairly small deposit.  Normally, between 10% and 20%.

For summer holidays, we have noticed in recent years, the family resorts are frequently significantly better value than European resorts. So, worth bearing in mind - particularly if you wish to travel for more than a week.  Mauritius also has the benefit of being in pretty much the same time zone as the UK, so no jet lag!
