chewton glen

weekends from £750 chewton glen england

This 18th century, red-brick and white-painted house has a spoiling spa and attentive staff, and it’s near both the beach and the New Forest for lots of outdoorsy activities.

It’s a quintessentially English place to stay – within the 130 acres of grounds are manicured gardens, a 9-hole golf course, a traditional, stone outdoor swimming pool. a croquet lawn and a putting green. Inside décor is majestic and traditional with a subtly contemporary twist. There are spacious, posh sitting rooms with super comfy sofas and chairs to have tea in, and modern British meals are served in a restaurant with different rooms – ask for a table in the conservatory for light and spaciousness.

The spa is a major attraction, especially for its exceptional hydrotherapy pool set in a pretty conservatory with wall to sky windows – there’s an open air whirlpool just outside. The neo-classical 17m indoor swimming pool is ozone-treated, and there are aromatherapy saunas and crystal steam rooms to enjoy. Eat healthy meals in the large spa lounge-cum-café with garden views.

On offer are an inviting range of massages (including organic ila treats), pressure point therapy, body cocoons, reflexology and oxygen facials by Linda Meredith. Pedicures and manicures are done in a room overlooking the garden, and include a bottle of polish so you can touch up your nails at home.

There’s a gym, of course, and daily classes include aqua exercise, tai chi, pilates and yoga. You can jog in the grounds, or it’s just a 20 minute walk to the nearby beach. Hiking, horse-riding and mountain biking can be arranged in the New Forest, and sailing, diving and kayaking nearby.

Highs

  • Impeccable, friendly service
  • The spa’s huge hydrotherapy pool
  • The proximity to both beach and forest

Lows

  • Some might find the design a little staid
  • The gourmet food can be heavy – eat at the spa, or ask for the separate vegetarian menu for lighter options.
  • You’ll find there as many people here trying clay pigeon shooting as there are enjoying the spa

Healthy Traveller tip

The local beach has a large, stone pathway by the sea suitable for long head-clearing walks in any weather.

Who goes

30 and 40-something couples, posh families and hedge fund millionaires who fly down in their helicopters.

Room tip

  • The most affordable ‘Bronze’ bedrooms overlook parkland, while ‘Gold’ rooms have a balcony or a terrace.
