durban country club

durban country club kwazulu natal

One of the oldest golf courses in South Africa, it's hosted more South African “Opens” than any other.  After an over night flight from Europe you can comfortably be on the first tee after a leisurely lunch.

Durban Country Club is on the northern side of Durban and was designed by George Waterman and Laurie Waters.  This famous golf club opened in 1922 and is beautifully laid out - many holes will remain in your mind long after you have played it.  It ranks amongst the top 5 in South Africa.

This gently undulating course is built in high dunes close to the sea with many holes running through dense tropical vegetation.   The priority, however, is to keep your ball on the ‘straight and narrow’ as the ever present flora and fauna line the fairways in uncompromising numbers.  Other perils are the greenside bunkering which are numerous and substantial.  Water features are on only a couple of holes but fast and subtly breaking greens are among the many challenges thrown at you.  The infamous par three 12th has an up turned ‘saucer’ of a green and has claimed a number of famous scalps. The third hole is considered to be one of the best par five’s in the world.  You play off a high tee to a narrow stretch of fairway framed by a large, deep bunker on the left hand side.

Durban Country Club is well placed to visit many other courses on the north and south coast of Kwazulu Natal as well as being close to some fine beaches and small resorts.  Whilst the Cape is perfect from November through to April, Kwazulu Natal is better during the rest of the year.

Just north of Durban, on the beach at Umhlanga Rocks is The Oyster Box hotel - awarded Country Winner: Luxury Hotel 2011 and Country Winner: Best Luxury Wellness Spa 2011 by World Luxury Hotel Awards.  Or, if you prefer smaller hotels or would like to rent a private home, there's the Zimbali Coastal Resort nearby.

There are many great golf courses in South Africa.  We've played all the top courses and would be happy to put together a tailored golf tour for you, or simply organise golf at certain times on your holiday.  Tell us what you would like to do, and we'll organise everything for you.
