lucknam park

weekends from £650 lucknam park england

This is a refined, romantic hotel set on a 500-acre estate in Wiltshire with its own equestrian centre and a superlative contemporary spa.

Drive slowly up the long driveway framed by beech and lime trees and leave your cares behind. Relax in the Georgian drawing room or wood-panelled library, wander through the little courtyard filled terracotta pots of vibrant flowers and roam the vast grounds sniffing fresh cut grass and lavender. Bedrooms and suites are opulent and traditional without feeling staid, and service is impeccable. Healthy, contemporary meals are served in an uplifting environment at the spa brasserie; for gourmets there’s the Michelin starred Park Restaurant in the main house.

The wonderfully spacious and light-filled spa in the grounds provides an unexpected contrast to the hotel’s plush interiors. There’s a decent-sized pool for lengths, and an inside-outside hydrotherapy pool – sitting outside watching the black and cream tulips wave in the wind is glorious, and jets are perfectly placed for aching sacrums. Saunter between the various heat experiences, which include a Japanese salt room, an amethyst room, a sauna and a steam room. There’s a beautifully put-together treatment list with products by Anne Semonin and Carita Paris, and even a trusty hairdresser who has been cutting guests hair here for 25 years.

We were particularly impressed by the relaxation room, for its floor to ceiling windows which opened easily, large wide adaptable wooden loungers graced with Sage green throws, and properly delicious Tea Pig teas served in beautiful Rhinefeldt pots. Have some sessions in the gym, or get out and about – the hotel’s Equestrian Centre has 35 horses and offers lessons, escorted rides around the estate and longer rides through the nearby countryside. Or just go walking – you’re near both Wiltshire and Cotswold countryside here, so the choice of routes is vast.

  • The feeling of spaciousness wherever you are
  • The fairy tale grounds with walled garden, rose garden, herb garden & Arboretum
  • The delicious spa with its genuinely cultivated feel

  • Such luxury doesn’t come cheap
  • You will feel you need to dress up a little here – part of the attraction for some.
  • There are rules – you can’t use your laptop in the Drawing Room, for example – but again, this will be a bonus for some.

Healthy traveller tip

The brasserie offers a ‘Healthy Corner’ menu at lunch, where you can eat delights such as chicken poached as soft as butter with avocado, mango, lettuce and poppy & yoghurt dressing.
