monte velho nature resort

per night from £100 monte velho nature resort costa vicentina

A colourful hilltop coastal farmhouse, in Costa Vicentina National Park and surrounded on all sides by beautiful rolling hills, with awesome views of the ocean and just minutes away from the sensational beaches of the wild west coast.

Two of the best surfing beaches are in the immediate vicinity, and we can organise surf lessons for all ages (from 10 upwards) and levels of ability.

For years, Henrique Balsemão travelled the world as a producer of his own TV show. However, the more he travelled, the more he was certain that the most beautiful region that he had ever seen, and the place where he wanted to live, was the southwest coast of Portugal, where he spent some of the best times in his life, surfing. Now we can all share his dream at Monte Velho!

Located up a dirt track, 2km off the main road, the single-storey hotel is comfortable but simple and very laid back.  The atmosphere is fabulously relaxed and informal. The bedrooms are all colourful and cosy, each with their own terrace, hammock and a day bed.  Perfect for relaxing and admiring the views.  A good breakfast is served on the delightful shaded terrace, and whilst there is no restaurant, Henrique can recommend local places for other meals.

You’re in the middle of nowhere, where south-western Europe sinks into the Atlantic. You’ll find the odd village, but that’s about it: no resorts, no development, just mile after mile of forested ridge. Staggering beaches combine with dunes, cliffs and caves to offer a sense of real wilderness. Small colonies of surfers hang out in the water and ride the waves, so join them or watch with awe.

If you'd like to join them but need a few lessons first, we can fix up an instructor, a board and a wetsuit for you and / or your children.  For other exercise and entertainment options, there are some great walking and biking trails running in all directions from Monte Velho.

  • Very relaxed, laid-back atmosphere
  • Magnficent views of the ocean
  • Lots of activities for all the family

  • Only breakfast is served at the hotel; all other meals must be eaten out at local restaurants
  • Not right on the beach: it's a 30 minute walk or a 5 minute bike ride
  • No swimming pool
