Spirit Bear Lodge provides exclusive access to wildlife viewing and cultural sites within Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation traditional territory. Situated on Swindle Island’s east coast, within the Great Bear Rainforest, it occupies the world’s only spirit bear conservancy. Canada wildlife holidays here are therefore like nowhere else in this vast nation. Spirit bears (or Kermode bears – black bears with pale fur) are joined by humpback whales, otters and sea lions.
Expansive channel-facing windows allow guests to continually enjoy some of Canada’s finest wildlife viewing opportunities. Built to resemble a First Nations’ longhouse, Spirit Bear Lodge hangs over the shoreline. Meanwhile, interiors have a modern west coast feel. Bedrooms feature cedarwood highlights, alongside touches such as headboards lovingly engineered from driftwood.
The lodge’s rainforest location ensures wildlife viewing is front and centre of any stay. After learning about a guest’s personal interests, staff offer a range of activities. These include whale watching tours by boat, spirit bear spotting on foot, and First Nations cultural experiences.
The ‘great room’ is a shared space decorated with traditional art and comprising areas including a cosy lounge. There is also an exterior ocean view deck ideal for relaxing at any time of day. Evenings are a time for great food served communally. However, the lodge also hosts optional talks in the evenings to help guests make the most of their stay.
There are just 12 guest bedrooms, split between two small wings, guaranteeing a tranquil night’s sleep. Each shares the uninterrupted ocean views of the great room. They feature either a king-sized bed or twin beds without feeling cramped.
