surya samudra

7 nights from £1,925 surya samudra kerala

Originally a private house, Surya Samudra is now a charming boutique resort with spectacular views of pristine beaches and the Arabian Sea.

Located just outside Kovalam, in a quiet location, Surya Samudra is a 22 all suite eco-friendly resort set in expansive tropical gardens . This delightful little resort is perched high on top of the cliffs overlooking two almost private white sand beaches.

Many of the rooms are actually authentic Keralan houses transplanted from their original derelict locations to the hillside that slopes towards the coast. They have heavy wooden doors and window shutters and the interiors are finished in traditional style, with outdoor garden bathrooms. All rooms face the sea to get the full effect of the cooling breezes.

The open restaurant serves a variety of food, including seafood freshly caught by local fishermen. Below this is a unique pool hewn from the hillside and featuring exposed boulders.  Apart from relaxing on the beach or by the pool, and exploring this gorgeous corner of India, the principal reason for visiting Suya Samudra is its fantastic spa and the wealth of Ayurvedic treatments available.  Plus, its yoga - which is practiced at the pavilion overlooking the twin bays separated by a granite promontory.

Other activities at the hotel include catamaran and motorboat rides, astrology, cooking classes and selection of cultural experiences to explore the stunning local landscape.

Best time to visit:  November through to April.

Location:  Surya Samudra sits on a private beach overlooking the Arabian Sea, 5 miles south of Kovalam, in Kerala.   It's within easy reach of Vizhinjam Beach, Lighthouse Beach, and Hawah Beach.

How to get here:  13-hour flight (1 change) to Trivandrum Thiruvananthapuram International. The drive to Surya Samudra from the airport takes around half an hour.

Other ideas for wellness retreats in India

  • In Kanartaka, also southern India, there's Swa Swara on the famous Om beach or, for a bit more luxury, we recommend a Relais & Chateaux country retreat called Shreyas, about an hour from Bangalore
  • Alternatively, head north to the majestic Himalayas for a stay at the Ananda Spa

The Rock Garden Classic Suites are Surya Samudra's entry level rooms, located in the main block without sea views. Only the Rock Garden rooms are available with twin beds.  The cottages called Heritage Classic, Heritage Superior and Heritage Premium have sea views. Essentially the better the room, the closer to the sea you get with better views and their top suite is the cliff-front Octagon and Banyan Tree Bungalow which is ideal for honeymooners and has a romantic outdoor bath.

Spa

Surya Samudra's globally acclaimed spa is infused with timeless therapeutic traditions from across the world: including Ayurveda, the ancient Indian healing system, perfected for over 5000 years.

The therapists are trained in Yoga, meditation, authentic Thai and Western relaxation techniques and traditional Asian therapies like reflexology. Working alongside the therapists, thechefs tailor meals around your dietary requirements and those suggested by the spa's doctor.

A holiday here gives you a perfect balance of international spa therapies, a cleansing spa diet and clean, fresh air.

Getting here

Normally the best route and best value fare is to fly with Emirates via Dubai to Trivandrum.  Transfers from Trivandrum to Surya Samudra are just 30 minutes.

In addition to enjoying daily yoga and spa treatments at Surya Samudra, there are several interesting excursions on offer for those guests who wish to explore the local area...

Spend the day discovering Trivandrum’s rich history

Depart Surya Samudra with one of their knowledgeable Tour Guides.  First stop is a look around the ancient Padmanabhaswamy Temple, dedicated Lord Vishnu. It's been in the news for one of the richest treasure troves ever found.  After that you walk down an amazing bazaar street and its vibrant, colourful markets, before visiting  Kuthiramalika Palace with its fascinating 122 carved wooden horses.

Lunch is an amazing Sadhya Meal served on a banana leaf in Trivandrum's world famous "shabby chic" restaurant.  After lunch, your guide will take you to Napier museum, full of rare archeological artifacts and ancient ornaments. It also houses an art gallery.

Approx. £70 per couple.

Backwater Cruise and Beach Picnic

A short 20 minute drive south of Surya Samudra, The Poovar estuary was once the epicenter of trade in sandalwood, spice and ivory.  You will be dropped off at a motor boat that cruises through unspoiled coconut groves.  The boat leads you up to Golden Sand Beach where you can see where backwater meets Arabian Sea.  Here you will discover a luxurious sunbed and a special picnic hamper that Surya Samudra's chef has prepared for you and have the chance to relax in this amazing spot over a glass of chilled wine.

After your afternoon on the beach, the team will pack up your picnic and on return the boat will take you through a pristine Mangrove Forest.  This stretch is full of aquatic birds busy hunting for fish.  Back at the Jetty, your driver will transfer you back to retreat.

Approx. £100 per couple

There is also another version of the above, except at sunset.

Fisherman’s Delight

Visit the local fish market at Vizingjam harbour at 7 am with the hotel's chef.  Spend time watching the ancient custom of fish auctions as each boat arrives back from a long night at sea.  Ancient Vizingjam was the capital of Venad and has such atmosphere that you just have to keep your camera going. The view across the harbour looks past the big Old Catholic church right on the beach and 2 distant mosques at the far end.  Choose the fish that you want the chef to cook for your dinner and don’t forget to mention the cooking style you prefer.  Later that night enjoy a three course dinner with the freshest fish that you selected.

Approx. £50 per couple.

Picnic with the Asian Elephant

An hour’s drive out of the Retreat, through rubber plantations, you reach one of Kerala’s secret nature hideaways. A Dam across the Neyyar river has created a scenic reservoir that teams with wildlife and the outstanding feature is the Elephant Rehabilitation Centre.  Here you have a rare chance of a close encounter with Asia’s behemoth - Elephas Maximas.  This camp of tamed elephants spends their leisure time here when they are free of their Festival duties. Join the elephant trainers in helping bathe these animals.  Look out for baby elephants frolicking while being trained and muster the courage to go atop the magnificent Asian Elephant for a twenty minute unforgettable ride.

The hotel team will put together a Picnic Lunch Hamper with a chilled bottle of wine for your enjoyment in these natural surroundings, as well as take care of all park entry, safari and elephant ride fees.

Approx. £80 per couple.
