uma ubud by como

7 nights from £1,485 uma ubud by como bali

Uma means ‘living house’ in Balinese, and this is a relaxed, contemporary home from home on the edge of the arty town of Ubud with a boutique spa, complementary yoga classes and tropical jungle views.

Light and airy suites offer views of lush gardens or the inspiring Tjampuhan valley, and design is understated with pretty finishes, all pale wood, soft lighting, white voile drapes and subtly embroidered bedspreads. Locally sourced, Balinese-inspired food is served at the Kemiri restaurant, where we especially enjoyed the COMO Shambhala menu for the mainly veggie and organic dishes packed with nutrition.

Take a complimentary yoga class in the open-air pavilion, meditate in a thatched bale and indulge in reflexology, massages and facials at the tranquil COMO Shambhala spa. There’s a small steam room, sauna and gym, and a gorgeous pool surrounded by super-comfy day beds and backed by wooden frames filled with hanging white Thunbergia flowers.

This is the kind of place you can amble about in your favourite kaftan, but mountain biking, rafting and guided walks in the surrounding hills and forests can also be arranged. You can be creative too, with private classes in mask painting, batik and puppet making as well as cookery. Be sure to visit Ubud for its Hindu temples, markets, Balinese music and dance ceremonies and galleries – the hotel can set up special meetings with local artisans if you so choose.

  • Fantastic jungle scenery
  • Proximity to the arty town of Ubud,
  • It’s a hotel, but it’s tailored to wellbeing – you’ll even get a yoga mat in your room

  • It’s 2 hours inland, and the jungle can be mosquito-rich
  • The steam room and sauna are very small
  • The hotel is split into smoking and non-smoking areas, but you may still catch the odd unwelcome whiff if fellow guests smoke

Healthy Traveller Tip

The free daily guided walks are very easy and tailored to the slowest guest. If you want something more adventurous, ask for a private guide and trek to the Tjampuhan Ridge.
