mediterranean morocco

Opened in September 2016, Banyan Tree's latest outpost will be located on Morocco's Mediterranean coast.

Finally, Banyan Tree devotees will no longer have to fly to Thailand or Bali for their fix.  Soon, it will be a relatively short flight down to Tangiers for a stay at Banyan Tree Tamouda Bay, near the charming city of Tetouan.  This will be the first all pool-villa resort in Morocco.

Reflecting Spanish influence, Tetouan is a neat enclave of sparkling avenues fringed by outrageously pink, purple and vermillion bougainvillea flowers that cascade over the snowy walls of European style villas while fountains cool the sunny plazas.  The Medina of Tetouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is considered to be a typical example of Andulasian influence.

Further inland, tucked away in the Rif mountains (about 50 minutes drive from Banyan Tree), Chefchaouen is widely regarded as one of the prettiest towns in Morocco. It is particularly unique for the fact that each building is painted blue.  Referred to locally as Chaouen, the town has long been a melting pot of cultures, welcoming Berbers, Muslims and Jews exiled from Granada, and later European, British and American explorers.

Weather and when to go

Morocco's Mediterranean coast has a semi-arid climate with mild wet winters and hot dry summers. Average temperatures range from 5°C in the winter to 36°C in the summer. The wet winters and dry summers are similar to those found elsewhere around the Mediterranean. The best time to visit is in the Spring and Autumn with abundant sunshine during the day and cooler evenings, temperatures are around 35°C.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in Morocco, and while it is certainly up to the discretion of each client, to a certain extent it is recommended in order to guarantee the best level of service.
